was conscious and he said "I was stabbed this morning by the man Yiu Fai, this man (pointing to him) on the bed in the middle of room No.2." You will form your own opinion whether the pink bed can reasonably be described as 'in the middle of hut No.2' or whether these words could reasonably apply to the blue bed on which the accused slept. "I was stabbed with a knife." The accused was asked if he desired to ask any questions and all he said was "That is correct." I suggest that the only reasonable interpretation to place on those words is "I know what I did, I have not lost my memory, I have not lost my consciousness. am fully conscious of what I did and what the wounded man said is correct."

I

From there the accused man went to the police station and there the same day he was charged. In answer to that charge he said "Your charge against me is murder. I was wounded by someone

better have me shot. If they won't have me shot I must ask that I be taken to hospital for treatment."

I don't know what that

means except that the reference to a wound there rather seems to suggest that the wounding preceded the incident on the morning of the 30th, possibly by some considerable amount of time. But I have given you three statements made at different times by the accused man. There are two more statements to consider. When he was before the Magistrate on the 6th August, when again the matters which were the subject matter of investigation were a good deal clearer in his memory than they are today, he said in effect "the deceased struck me first. He wounded me. I went to him again and spoke to him about the wounding but he paid no heed to me,

then he said some words to make me annoyed, then he tried to assault me. I ran back to my bed, he came to my bed. I took a knife to frighten him away and unintentionally I stabbed him."
